A New Approach to School Discipline: Understanding Restorative Justice
Last year we launched the Brooklyn Restorative Justice Project, an ambitious 4-year leadership initiative to change disciplinary culture in Brooklyn schools.
On our newly launched Insights to Impact Blog, our Vice President of Programs Kaberi Banerjee Murthy introduces our nonprofit grantees and their Restorative Justice Coordinators who are now working with students, teachers, parents, and leadership in our four partner schools to implement holistic alternatives.
Meet the Restorative Justice Coordinators and hear directly from each about their unique approaches:
- A Roadmap for Success: Tailoring Restorative Justice to a School's Unique Needs by Skye Roper-Moses, New York Peace Institute at Rachel Carson High School in Coney Island
- Building a Stronger Sense of Community through Restorative Justice by Ashley Ellis, Good Shepherd Services at The School for Democracy and Leadership in Downtown Brooklyn
- Tackling the School-to-Prison Pipeline with Transformative Justice by Nicole Lavonne Smith, Sweet River Consulting at Science Skills Center High School in East Flatbush
Next Week on the Blog: Suzanne Hitchman, Restorative Justice Coordinator from Partnership with Children, writes about her work at Ebbets Field Middle School in Crown Heights.

- Learn how to use positioning and personality to help keep all work on track

This workshop is a free program of our Brooklyn Accelerator capacity-building initiative.
Donor Spotlight: Susan Whoriskey
Partner, Sedreddine & Whoriskey LLP
Brooklynite Since 2004
Why did you open up a Donor Advised Fund at Brooklyn Community Foundation?
I was looking for a way to help organizations in Brooklyn that were doing good work beyond the few charities I already knew about.
It’s great to be able to rely on the Brooklyn Community Foundation to learn more about the organizations doing the best work to help Brooklynites most in need, and I’m happy knowing that our charitable donations are also supporting the important work of the Foundation.
New Director of Operations: Edgardo Rivera
We’re proud to welcome Edgardo Rivera as our new Director of Operations starting this week!
