Brooklyn Insight Findings, and Our New Direction

October 30, 2014

Today, we are thrilled to release the Final Report from our Brooklyn Insights community engagement project, alongside a bold new vision for our work.

As you will recall, last January we launched Brooklyn Insights in a unique effort to hold a boroughwide dialogue about Brooklyn’s future. Our aim was to construct a fresh approach to supporting community-led change, led by the ideas and expertise of our communities.

Over six months, through nearly 1,000 conversations with residents and leaders from across the borough, five major themes emerged: Neighborhood Cohesion, Youth, Immigrant Communities, Criminal Justice, and Racial Justice.

For the complete Final Report and an in depth view of the Brooklyn Insights process, visit

Viewing these themes as key levers of change, we have developed a balanced and focused action plan. We will begin by:

  • Investing in opportunities and outcomes for vulnerable youth
  • Fostering neighborhood strength
  • Recognizing the excellence and innovation of local nonprofits

Each program will be led by a committee of Foundation Board members, donors, community leaders, and experts in the sector. We anticipate launching the first of these programs in early 2015.

Also, as a result of our work on Brooklyn Insights, the Foundation now has a clear vision and mission—to spark lasting social change, mobilizing people, capital, and expertise for a fair and just Brooklyn—anchored by five core values: courage, creativity, honesty, collaboration and respect.

We are so grateful for your partnership throughout this process. We welcome your feedback on our new approach and how we can improve to better serve our borough. And please visit us at our new home in Crown Heights anytime!

Above all, Brooklyn Community Foundation is committed to supporting great Brooklyn organizations—be it through our new strategic direction or our expanding Donor-Advised Fund program.
