The Brooklyn Community Foundation has a simple slogan that we love and try to live: "Do Good Right Here." They know that you don't have to go to Haiti or Pakistan or any economically hard-up place in this country or abroad to make a positive impact. There's plenty of work to be done right in your neighborhood, wherever you are.

FORT GREENE -- Tables were piled high with peaches, eggplant, collard greens, carrots, plums, tomatoes, broccoli and more on Thursday in front of Ingersoll Houses on Myrtle Avenue. Behind the farm stand was the “Ingersoll Garden of Eden,” blooming with marigolds, butterfly bushes, lavender and daisies on what used to be a parched lawn in front of the large public housing development.

When we started the Brooklyn Community Foundation late last year, we recognized that the economy was in dire straits and that the top priority for Brooklynites would not be opening their checkbooks to a new charity.
