"It's like a juggling act between the bills and things like clothing," said Bedford-Stuyvesant-raised Butts, 32, who has spent two months in an East Flatbush homeless shelter with her kids after being evicted from their apartment in a Queens housing project. Work, when she can get it, is usually part time and just above minimum wage, bringing in about $900 to $1,200 a month, she said.

NEW YORK—Brooklyn last month established its first public community philanthropic organization, Brooklyn Community Foundation (BCF), a reworked version of the private and charitable Independent Community Foundation (ICF). ICF was set up in 1998 by Independent Bank, a private company. Over the past 11 years, ICF gave more than $70 million in grants, and became the largest private community foundation in Brooklyn.

They've had to tighten their purse strings, but a musical Brooklyn family has not let hard times throw their heartstrings out of tune. Despite both being out of work, Sherri and Sean DeBarry have kept harmony in their Bedford-Stuyvesant home by supporting their children's love for string instruments. "There are sleepless nights ... nights holding your head and saying how can I get this together," said Sean DeBarry, 41, a laid-off hospital administrator. "And when I listen to my kids; it's like a getaway."

A new charity aimed at serving the borough of Brooklyn was officially unveiled Thursday. The Brooklyn Community Foundation is the first organization of its kind in the borough.The goal is to guide donations to five areas that greatly need funding, such as "green communities" and "arts for all."

OCEAN HILL — The owners of 41 new affordable eco-friendly homes in Ocean Hill/Brownsville received their keys at a Habitat for Humanity-New York City-sponsored celebration last weekend.The ribbon-cutting at the complex — known as the Atlantic Avenue Residences, 2331 Atlantic Ave. at Eastern Parkway — marked an historic first for Habitat-NYC. This is the largest and greenest multifamily complex ever built by a Habitat affiliate in the nation, according to Josh Lockwood, executive director of Habitat-NYC. It is expected to receive LEED Gold certification, one of the highest green building ratings.
