Chief Development Officer

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is an entrepreneurial, results-oriented, and seasoned fundraising professional. The incumbent will lead fundraising strategies to develop and grow new individual, corporate, and foundation prospects, including building a broad base of emerging donors through the Brooklyn Org membership program.

The Chief Development Officer is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the President and CEO and serves on the Executive Leadership group, which is comprised of the President and CEO, Chief of Staff, and Chief Operating and Financial Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Rapidly gain a thorough understanding of the scope and diversity of Brooklyn Org’s history, programs, constituents, donors, and special events.
  • Quickly establish relationships with our existing donors and donor advised fund holders who are currently supporting Brooklyn Org.
  • Establish credibility with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, development leadership, program officers, and staff to gain an understanding of the substantive priorities of the current strategic plan and translate those priorities into successful fundraising initiatives.
  • Set and achieve ambitious but attainable fundraising goals for new individual donors, foundations, and corporate prospects with the President and CEO.
  • Strategically execute and grow the new membership program to develop a broad base of new lower-level individual donors, families, and small businesses to build connections to the Brooklyn nonprofit community and develop long-term relationships and donor leadership.
  • Lead the research, identification, engagement, and cultivation of new individual, corporate, and foundation prospects, completing research profiles and tailored cultivation strategies for each prospect.
  • Strategically engage the President and CEO and all key staff in public outreach and fundraising activities, providing meaningful engagement opportunities and effective support.
  • Oversee and implement Brooklyn Org’s institutional giving strategy, including research, reporting, underwriting, and management of corporate partnerships.
  • Represent Brooklyn Org at donor meetings and events, articulating the organization’s unique value to the borough, community engagement practices, strategies, and successes.
  • Ensure the growth of Brooklyn Org’s donor base through list acquisition, direct marketing strategies, and broad-based fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage fundraising revenue reporting and reconciliation with Finance team.
  • Develop budget projections based on historical and market assessments.
  • Ensure documentation of all development activity related to donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship in CRM platform.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of relevant consultants and vendors.
  • Oversee growth, maintenance, and enhancement of the organization’s development database in collaboration with the Vice President of Donor Engagement and Vice President of Philanthropic Initiatives.
  • Manage staff and consultants responsible for all fundraising activities, events, grant writing, and Donor Advised Funds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree, CFRE, or CAP certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in raising a minimum of $2.5 million annually with a track record of growing revenue year over year.
  • Passion, commitment, and understanding of Brooklyn Org’s mission and values, with a deep commitment to racial equity, justice, and Brooklyn communities.
  • Proven track record of providing strategic direction, leadership, and operational management of fundraising initiatives, resulting in marked improvement and growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide supportive leadership and effective management.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill to enhance the infrastructure of Brooklyn Org’s prospect and grant writing programs, with knowledge of prospect research methods and tools.
  • Collaborative and enthusiastic leader with the ability to adapt to changing priorities, refine strategies after feedback, and multi-task to meet deadlines.
  • Genuine team player with the ability to build long-term, collaborative relationships based on good judgment, collaboration, mutual trust and confidence, integrity, and discretion.
  • Excellent communication (writing, speaking, presentation and listening) skills and keen attention to detail, with the ability to effectively communicate with key internal and external constituencies.
  • Affirmative, positive, and motivational style, combined with a strong, results-oriented work ethic.
  • Grace, poise, confidence, and history of meticulous follow-through in staffing top leadership.
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $180,000 – $190,000 and is dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant experience.

Director of Events

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Events will be a creative visionary who is entrepreneurial and focused on fundraising. They will be responsible for strategic direction, administration, development and execution of all events for Brooklyn Org. The incumbent works collaboratively with the leadership and Development teams to ensure that events meet BKO’s standards and maximizes outcomes across the organization that create impactful programs and events for the Brooklyn community. The director will work to identify new and emerging areas of learning technology related to meeting management and takes a lead role to incorporate and institute collaborative objectives. This position includes accountability for logistical planning, budgeting and complex contract negotiations and vendor management.

The Director of Events is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Chief Development Officer as a member of the Donor Engagement Team and wider Development department. They will also work closely with the CEO and other executive team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership for BKO’s events to ensure they support the strategic and operational goals of the organization.
  • Develops and monitors the events revenue and expense budget.
  • Manages all logistical needs for two main annual events in the spring and fall.
  • Manages the proposal review process, notifying accepted/rejected presenters and instituting speaker compliance requirements.
  • Reviews all billing and payments for audio visual services, hotel and/or event sites, decorating and security vendor invoices that includes staffing and registration services, and resolves discrepancies and assigns accounting codes.
  • Negotiates third-party registration contract, reviews, establishes and implements policies, procedures and guidelines for registration services.
  • Contracts housing company, monitors hotel room block and develops website.
  • Directs and manages event planning and logistics including space and site selections, food requirements, meeting room set-up, audio visual, registration and housing.
  • Provides oversight of staff and Board of Directors travel arrangements and related logistics.
  • Works collaboratively with the Communications team on the BKO website, mobile applications and print materials related to all events, including events registration.
  • Supervises, mentors, and serves as a leading authority to staff involved in the events management functions.
  • Approaches all events through a fundraising lens and ensures that all events are aligned with our Brand and Mission
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or an advanced business degree or CMP highly preferred.
  • Fundraising acumen
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in meetings and/or events planning, including project management, business planning, and integration of technology on both a strategic and tactical level; experience leading meetings for an association strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing large vendor contracts concurrently.
  • Supervisory and staff development experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a broad range of constituents and keen attention to detail.
  • Strong, proven leadership skills amongst staff and management; ability to engage effectively with senior professionals (internal and external business partners).
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a collaborative team; to take both initiative and direction.
  • Strong budget management skills.
  • Ability to apply creative problem solving and troubleshoot challenges as they arise.
  • Ability to efficiently manage time, meet schedules/deadlines and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with nonprofits, including grant-making organizations, charitable giving funds, and/or fiscal sponsorships.
  • Passionate about creating opportunities for Brooklyn’s residents; knowledge of Brooklyn nonprofits preferred.

Donor Services Associate

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Donor Services Associate (DSA) is an integral member of the Donor Services team focused on providing the highest level of service and support for the Donor Advised Fund (DAF) program. The DSA works closely with the Donor Services Manager, Vice President of Philanthropic Initiatives, and Finance team to lead administrative and systems management support, while guiding donor advisors in achieving their charitable giving goals.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based in Brooklyn and reports to the Donor Services Manager.  Occasional evening and weekend work is part of the expectations for the person in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as main point of contact for current and prospective fund holders with inquiries about the Brooklyn Org’s DAF program and provide assistance with their charitable giving goals.
  • Support the Vice President of Philanthropic Initiatives, Donor Services Manager, Development and Communications teams in the preparation and dissemination of marketing and promotional materials (both in-print and online) about Brooklyn Org’s DAF program to target markets and constituencies.
  • Record and maintain all contributions and grants records, utilizing fund management platforms; generating and sending weekly reports, supporting our DAF team on monthly/quarterly financial reconciliation, coordinating with third party vendors to resolve donor management issues and contacting donors to maintain guardianship of donor intent.
  • Draft and issue timely donor acknowledgments and grantee award letters, as needed.
  • Work with the Vice President of Philanthropic Initiatives and Donor Services Manager to improve departmental workflows, enhance accessibility and user functionality of donor portal/database, and maintain fund documents, including an explicit focus on upgrading our donor portal and database processes.
  • Provide general support including schedule management for DSM & VPPI, coordinating in-office and external meetings and events, assist in sending out mailings, and other administrative tasks as necessary.
  • Support planning and coordination of virtual and in-person donor events.
  • Coordinate with appropriate Development team members to ensure accuracy and donor intent of DAF contributions.
  • Participate actively in BKO’s Racial Justice Learning Series.
  • Contribute emerging ideas, address challenges, and problem-solve solutions to team and during all-staff meeting discussions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant development and/or administrative experience
  • Proficiency in CommunitySuite CRM tools, a major plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a broad range of constituents and keen attention to detail
  • Familiarity with nonprofits, including grant-making organizations, charitable giving funds, and/or fiscal sponsorships

Brooklyn Org has a competitive and exhaustive benefits and leave plan and the salary range for this position is $55,000 – $65,000 dependent on the successful candidate’s background and experience.
