Welcome Asylum Seekers to NYC - Give By April 30th

This Spring, we're mobilizing Brooklynites to aid the newest New Yorkers.

As partners in the Welcome NYC initiativewe aim to raise and distribute an additional $50,000 for five community-led nonprofits that are stretching their capacity and finances to support asylum seekers.

Every dollar donated to our Immigrant Rights Fund now through April 30th will go to this urgent fundraising effort, to further these organizations’ ability to support asylum seekers while providing essential programs and services to Brooklyn’s immigrant communities each and every day:

  • Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees and Caribbean Women’s Health Association support women and families seeking safe harbor in Brooklyn’s Flatbush community, providing legal services, health care, and case management

  • Mexican Coalition provides new arrivals in Sunset Park and Borough Park with food and clothing essentials, while also connecting them to immigration legal services and access to health care, with a focus on indigenous language speakers

  • NY Immigration Coalition has helped welcome asylum seekers arriving at Port Authority, and leads a city-wide network of over 200 grassroots organizations to advocate at the federal, state, and city levels for government assistance and policy change

  • Queer Detainee Empowerment Project holistically supports people seeking refuge in New York City from violence and persecution based upon their gender expression and sexual identity

We are thrilled to share that, thanks to the generosity of ALLINBKLYN and audiences at The Jungle (through our partnership with St. Ann’s Warehouse and Good Chance Theatre), we have already raised over $10,000 towards our goal.

This $50,000 in new funding will be in addition to over $500,000 committed this year through our Immigrant Rights Fund. It's a critical and timely investment for Brooklyn, which is home to nearly 1 million foreign-born residents — nearly 40% of our borough’s population.

Since the Fund’s launch in 2016, we have raised and distributed more than $2.5 million for grassroots nonprofits serving Sunset Park, Bensonhurst, Bushwick, and beyond. We focus on long-term investments in organizations working on legal rights, connecting immigrants to benefits and supports, and providing direct services and navigation for indigenous language speakers.

Grants are awarded in partnerships with our Immigrant Rights Fund Advisory Council composed of immigrants, and children of immigrants, who have lived experience with the issues that we address, and who review and select the organizations that we fund.

We hope you will join us and give today. To everyone who now joins us in calling New York City home, we say Welcome!
