A Day to Celebrate Food & Family in Bed-Stuy

September 28, 2012

Things are getting pretty pricey in Brooklyn. From rising rent to restaurant bills, we all feel the pinch. The cost of living is going up across all of our great and varied communities, without any sign of stopping (if luxury high-rise construction and $8 mayonnaise are indicators).

No neighborhood is feeling it more than Bed-Stuy. Trendy new eateries and shops are opening up, and many developers are seeing dollar signs. Today, 32% of Bed-Stuy residents spend more than half of their income on housing. It’s becoming more and more expensive to call Bed-Stuy home, yet 48% of its children under age 18 are living in poverty.

At the end of the day, for many Bed-Stuy families, it seems like there’s little left to go toward putting healthy meals on the table.

Which is why, for the second consecutive year, we’re partnering with the Coalition for the Improvement of Bed-Stuy to present the Bedford Stuyvesant Food and Family Day, on Saturday, October 13th from 10am to 2pm at Restoration Plaza on Fulton Street.

Dozens of local food and health-focused organizations, advocates, educators, and businesses are coming together to present this day of free workshops, cooking demos, farmers market and green grocer tours, and family-friendly festivities.

Together, we’re highlighting the many affordable Bed-Stuy-based resources available to residents, and how we all can provide healthy, complete meals for our families on a budget—as well as become growers of our own fruits and vegetables.

Plus, we’re serving up a delicious and nutritious free lunch (with recipes)!

We’ll also be recognizing local food heroes—including youth and nonprofit organizations—who you can nominate here.

Most importantly, Food and Family Day is a space for neighbors to talk about local issues and the changes the community as a whole can implement toward addressing hunger and health challenges.

Whether or not you’re a Bed-Stuy resident, this is a day you won’t want to miss!
