Brooklyn Community Foundation was recently honored with the Sadie Nash Leadership Project's first annual Petticoat Award for leadership in nurturing Sadie Nash’s program for young women. The award was presented to Brooklyn Community Foundation president, Marilyn Gelber, and Toya Williford, BCF Program Directer, at the organization's annual Garden Party.

Held at one of NYC’s hidden gems, a garden set between two buildings with a unique address of 41 ½ Second Avenue, the evening featured a conversation between two young college bound “Nashers” and civil rights activist Diane Nash, an early Freedom Rider and voting rights organizer in Mississippi during the 1960s. Over 110 people attended event, helping raise over $20,000 for the Sadie Nash Leadership Project.

Brooklyn Community Foundation has been committed to helping nurture Sadie Nash since its early stages, watching it blossom into the successful organization that it is today. Created for and by girls from low-income households, the Sadie Nash Leadership Project is a unique educational program which supports the intellectual and emotional development of girls at a critical stage in their lives.
