Communities Served: Immigrants and allies across New York State
Mission: The New York Immigration Coalition aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants and extends opportunity to all. The NYIC promotes immigrants’ full civic participation, fosters their leadership, and provides a unified voice and a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities.
What our funding supports: City-wide collaboration with immigrant rights organizations and the “This is Our New York” response initiative.
Why we’re supporting them:
The NYIC boasts nearly 200 member organizations, helps foster immigrant community leadership and civic engagement, and puts immigrants at the table in the major public policy debates of the day. NYIC’s comprehensive “This is Our New York” initiative—launched in the weeks following the November 2016 president election to anticipate and protect against damaging anti-immigration policies under the Trump administration—includes outreach and education, legal services, response to hate crimes, advocacy and organizing, and media campaigns around immigrant rights.
The NYIC has worked with Make the Road New York, DRUM, and other member groups in New York City to organize multiple actions to register opposition to Trump’s Executive Orders that have a harmful and exclusionary impact on the many Muslim immigrant communities that the organization serves. The NYIC not only has the ability to respond quickly in moments of crisis, mobilizing at JFK airport and Battery Park, but also has the capacity to work proactively, creating opportunities for demonstrations of solidarity including organizing Jummah Prayers in community with New York's Muslim and immigrant populations. Check out their Facebook events page for the latest NYIC-sponsored actions around the city.
